Day Habilitation is intended for individuals with developmental disabilities who benefit from structured daytime activities that build or maintain skills used in everyday and community settings. It may be relevant for someone working on communication, social participation, daily living skills, community involvement, or exploring meaningful adult roles such as employment or retirement activities. Across the District of Columbia, Day Habilitation can combine structured skill-building with opportunities for community exploration, socialization, recreation, and participation.
How It Works
Day Habilitation may involve:
Practicing communication and social interaction skills
Developing or maintaining practical daily living skills
Participating in meaningful adult activities
Exploring community settings and local resources
Taking part in recreational and social activities
Exploring employment or integrated retirement opportunities
What to Expect
Daily activities are organized around the individual’s interests, preferences, and the skills being addressed through their authorized services. Support may include instruction, prompting, demonstration, or direct assistance as the individual participates in activities and applies skills in practical situations. Depending on the service arrangement, activities may occur in the community or in an appropriate structured setting, with opportunities for community participation incorporated into the day.
