Some individuals with developmental disabilities benefit from having another person available to participate with them in everyday activities, social interactions, and community experiences. Companion provides support and companionship during appropriate activities, helping an individual participate in the community, maintain social connections, and take part in ordinary routines or interests. For someone in Pennsylvania, this may mean having a companion present during a community outing, recreational activity, social visit, or another activity included within the individual’s authorized services. Companion is a recognized ODP service under Pennsylvania’s waiver programs.
How It Works
Companion support may involve:
Spending time together during appropriate daily activities

Accompanying the individual during community activities

Providing assistance during appropriate activities outside the home

What to Expect
Companion support is provided during the activities and settings covered by the individual’s authorized service rather than functioning as a clinical or therapeutic service. The companion participates alongside the individual and provides the level of assistance appropriate to the activity and the person’s needs. Depending on the service arrangement, support may occur at home or in community settings and can involve recreation, social activities, community participation, or other appropriate activities.
