Supporting community participation, encouraging practical skills beyond center settings

Some individuals with developmental disabilities need daytime assistance but do not receive that support in a traditional center-based environment. Non-Center-Based Day Support takes place in community settings and gives the individual opportunities to practice everyday skills while participating in activities outside a facility. In the Richmond area, for example, support could accompany an individual while using community resources, taking part in recreation, completing an activity, or practicing appropriate social interaction in an everyday setting.

How It Works

The individual may receive support while:

Practicing daily living skills in community settings

Participating in recreational or leisure activities

Using community resources and public services

Practicing communication and social interaction

Completing appropriate activities and community outings

Learning how to participate in community environments

What to Expect

The service is delivered where the individual is participating in an activity, rather than requiring the person to spend the day in a center. A support professional can provide instruction, prompting, supervision, or direct assistance as the individual navigates the activity and practices relevant skills. The setting and activities can vary from day to day according to the individual’s authorized services, needs, and appropriate community opportunities.
